No Fitting

For a long time, I thought I had to choose. Art is supposed to be sharply positioned, or so they say — and social media rewards that too: the people who follow you want to see the same thing again and again. I think that's wrong. For me, every decision to leave something out felt like not telling the whole story. And the story isn't finished. It's only just beginning.

For "No Fitting," I planned the piece conceptually and then worked through it, part by part. A lot of it got discarded — not harmonious, not right. In some places I had to build tension back up, in others bring too much tension back down. It was only once I laid the finished pieces together that I knew: this works. Exactly the way I'd imagined it.

At first glance, it's too much on one image. Then you start looking piece by piece — is that ceramic? How did she do that? Why like this? And somehow it still holds together. Maybe things can be completely different from each other and still sit side by side in harmony.

Regretting not having done something is worse than any failure. That's not just true for art. Stay or go — often you can't have it all side by side, or you just don't see that you can.
